100 Days to Health - Day 037 | Artificial Colors

Week 6 – Day 37

Tip for the Day

There are three common colorants that are used, mainly Tartrazine E102, Annato E160(B) and Aluminum E173.

Tartrazine is bright yellow dye ranging from cream to yellow to orange to green, commonly found in many sweets. This colorant generally has a wide range of allergic and intolerant symptoms including hyperactivity in children, asthma, migraines and skin rashes.

Food that is tartrazine free can contain other harmful additives, so always check what other ingredients it may contain as these can also be harmful – for instance Annato and Aluminium.

Annato is used to colour cheese and butter. Known to cause bad skin rashes.

Aluminium found in cooking pots when oxidation contaminates the food while being heated. This metal has been known to play a part in Alzheimer’s.

Recipe for the Day

‘Bean cheese’ spread or dip (dairy-free)

Sandwich spread ideas for school lunches and picnics.

Cheese is enjoyed frequently by dairy intolerant children/people, so here is an idea to make a cheese substitute.

1 can white beans – butter or kidney type

½ – 1 tsp mustard powder

¼ tsp turmeric

1 tsp Mary-Ann’s Herb or Garlic & herb salt

Optional: 1 spring onion

Ricotta cheese can replace the beans for a variation, but then its not dairy-free.
